i switched my son out of diapers into underwear and he walks around holding his peepee constantly now. like he feels like he has to hold it since its more “free” i guess. what do i say to get him to stop holding it all the time???

he also acts tells me he has to go potty literally every three minutes and then sits on the potty for a length of time–only to get up and tell me three minutes later that he has to go! half the time he doesn’t even go on the potty, he just says he has to go! he has really spent just about all day in the bathroom…
should i just put him back in diapers and assume he’s not ready? its really frustrating and i don’t understand what i’m doing wrong!!!

last week i’ve had him wearing loose shorts with no diaper and he was doing so well that when we put him in underwear…why is acting weird now that he’s wearing underwear instead of just shorts?

If he is almost 3, you shouldn’t give up and assume he isn’t ready. Many children are trained or almost trained at this point. If he is showing interest in going, even if it is every other minute, then he is ready and just needs the guidance and patience that goes with potty training. Try getting him a board with gold stars (or something to that effect) and reward him with a star when he actually pees in the potty. He will get excited to get the stars, and hopefully he will only use the potty when he actually has to go. Good luck!

The underwear feel weird to him. He was use to being snug in the diaper. Eventually he will stop holding his tee tee. I was constantly reminding my son not to mess with his. I also used candy as a reward. Every time he actually went I gave him a small piece of candy. It worked really well. We also read books on the toilet. The only problem I had with that was that he started to think that the bathroom was the only place to read. I had my son trained my 2 using these tactics. By all means do not put him back into a diaper. Just keep trying. Even if you have to make 1,000 trips to the potty in a day, he’ll get it.

Keep taking him to the potty. Buy him some whip cream and when he goes pee pee give him a pee pee treat..The whip cream squirted in his hands.

It is just all new to him. You aren’t doing anything wrong. It just takes time and patience. Just keep with it and remember not to let him see your frustration. He will get it eventually.

If he seemed very opposed to pottying, I would say to wait. But, he is genuinely interested in using the potty, and that’s a great sign. Just keep letting him explore the potty the way he is, and keep it fun for him. My kids liked having a reward chart…a sticker everytime they pottied, and a small prize after they got 30 stickers (my daughter wanted watermelon lipgloss, my son a HotWheels car).
As far as the peepee holding goes, you may want to choose your battles. The more attention you bring to the situation, the more fun it will be for him to keep being inappropriate. Perhaps just explain to him that his peepee is his private area…and the bathroom is the right place for that.
